Computer Centre Upgrade for LHC Computing
Vault Conversion
Additional raised floor is required in the long term for the LHC offline
farms, but also in the short term to equipment to be installed elsewhere whilst
the machine room is being upgraded. Various alternative solutions were
investigated (e.g. using the barn or installing mezzanines), but converting the
vault to a machine room was the best alternative.
There have been 4 major components to this conversion:
- Removal of IT's tape robots and the archived 3480
cartridges
- Removal of all the old infrastructure (air
conditioning ducts, electrical distribution, ...)
- Some heavy civil engineering to remodel the vault
and to create additional storage areas.
- Installation of the new infrastructure.
